A Short History Of WeiQi 围棋简史	Having developed in china between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago, Weiqi (called Go in Japan and Baduk in Korea) contends with backgammon for the right to be called the oldest game still played in its original form. Today millions in Asia and thousands elsewhere play Weiqi. Ironically, Weiqi has had it difficulties in China, where Confucius looked on it as a waste of time. Mao Zedong initially required his generals to study it only to have it condenmed during the Cultural Revolution as a pastime of intellectuals. Weiqi was introduced in Japan 1,200 to 1,400 years ago, reportedly by a Buddhist priest who had visited China. It seems to have shown up in Korea before Japan, but in Japan, the game was developed to its full potential. Weiqi was studied by Japan's warrior class and eventually institutionalized in four "Go houses", where families developed and passed down Go techniques in the same way that other Japanese families passed down their techniques of sword-making and other skills of craftsmanship. Go spread to all levels of society and by the 18th century, had attained a status equal to that of the famed tea ceremony. Today, in China, Weiqi has regained its prominence following the end of the Cultural Revolution. Many first class Weiqi professionals have emerged and won championships in competition with their counterparts in Japan and Korea.
Beginner Chess 国际象棋初级班	The course will cover the most basic chess knowledge such as piece movement, pawn games (including En Passant), pawn promotion, values of pieces, concepts of checkmate and stalemate, basic chess principles, one move checkmate puzzles, short chess games, scholar's mate, fool's mate, basic tactic terms (fork, pin, skewer, double check, discovery attack). Both Chess and Chinese Chess have had long histories. Students will learn and practice the basic rules and fundamental strategies at different stages of a game. As a result, students gain mental toughness, self-confidence and learn sportsmanship. Intermediate Chess 国际象棋中级班	This course will continue Beginner Chess and further cover various chess topics. The students will learn from mini chess games, basic checkmate patterns, and chess tactics. Students will also play chess during classes and learn to play Bughouse and Blitz. Homework will be 20 simple puzzles each week. Advanced Chess I 国际象棋提高班-1	The course will cover a variety of important chess topics including but not limited to: chess principles, Queen’s Gambit Declined and Colle System for white openings, Sicilian Defense for black openings, endgames, tactics (more than 1000 chess puzzles which I have compiled), annotated games form Kasparov, Tarrasch, Capablanca and Alekhine (every move will be explained), checkmate patterns and analyzing student games. Chess playing will be very limited during the classes due to the valuable lecture time. There will be a lot of activities in the class as well as in tournaments for the students. They will have excitements and despair, ups and downs, wins and losses. But the most important things about chess, as my son puts it, are “beat other kids, win trophies, make friends and have a lot of fun”. With professional chess teacher charging $30-40 an hour, you can’t beat this $68 a semester chess course. Advanced Chess II 国际象棋提高班-2	The course will continue the main themes as Advanced Chess I. Moreover and unique for this course, during the first half of the semester, I will cover and explain 50 basic fascinating and beautiful checkmate patterns contained in How to Beat Your Dad at Chess such as back rank mate, Arabian mate, smothered mate, and Fisher Trap etc. During the second half of the semester, I will cover and explain 50 basic famous and wonderful chess tactics contained in Chess Tactics for Kids such as Greek sacrifice, stalemates, zwischenzug etc. Every week's exercises are based on the lessons. This course requires students to have basic chess knowledge such as basic chess principles, checkmate and stalemate, pawn vs. king ending, knowing how to checkmate with a single rook or two bishops, solve one or two move puzzles. Bridge 桥牌	Bridge is a mind sport recognized by International Olympic Committee. Children learning bridge could improve their memory, concentration. It helps to develop their judgment, logic and analytical skills, as well as learning team work and improve social skills. Each class starts with instructions and followed by group exercise. For intermediate class, students will continue to learn about defense, partnership and how to play in tournament.	Bridge class started in Ray Chinese School from 2015. Students have participated in youth tournament with Whitney Young High School and other local young players in the past two years. It is our plan to continue it, probably more frequently. Some students also participated in the National Youth Bridge Championship in the past two years with good results. All of them had at least one win that puts their photo on Daily Bulletin.

中文朗诵演讲	演讲朗诵课寓教于乐，生动活泼地展开以学生为中心的课堂教学实践。将以提高学生的诵咏讲演综合能力为目的，通过营造良好的学习氛围，运用多媒体教学工具手段，设计有趣的教学互动，吸引并激发学生的学习热情, 并把中国文化和知识贯穿于教学中，为备战参加朗诵演讲比赛，为今后更深度的学习打下良好基础。老师将通过提供信息式演讲、演示性演讲、说服式演讲和即兴演讲不断演练，让学生克服紧张心理，学习演讲技巧，提高在众人面前的表达能力，并在期末完成“小小演说家”的表演。

Performing Art 儿童舞蹈表演	Children (boys and girls) who enjoy music, dance and performing should come to this class. Ballet (Level I) 芭蕾-1	This is a fun dance class for students age 7-9 years old. Students will learn mainly the ballet skills. Other styles of music and dances like Jazz and Chinese Folk Dances are also included in teaching. Students will sure experience the joy of dancing.
Ballet (Level II) 芭蕾-2	Students who have completed Ballet (Level I) and are 9-11 years old should register this class. Ballet skills from intermediate to advanced level will be taught through variety of music. Students will also have opportunity performing in special school and community events.

Sketch (Age 10 & Up) 素描(10岁以上)	This is a more advance class for students who already developed some drawing skills and wants to improve in further depth in sketch. Students explore the process of realism and abstraction and study proportion and composition, forms and shapes, shading and rendering, portraits and human figures. Students are encouraged to repeat this class for continued learning and practice.
Chinese Painting 墨趣学堂	Chinese Painting is returning Fall 2023. This course provides an introduction to traditional Chinese brush painting. Different types of materials and the effects produced by each are demonstrated. This course is for all ages. Singapore Math 新加坡数学	Ray Chinese School offers Signapre Math from 2nd grade to 6th grade; The Singapore Math Primary Mathematics curriculum features the Concrete> Pictorial> Abstract approach. Singapore Math students begin by learning through concrete and pictorial means before moving into abstract thought and development. This sequence encourages an active thinking process, communication of mathematical ideas, and problem solving skills. English Reading and Writing(Grade 1-3) 英语阅读和写作(1-3年级)	The objective is to develop student's ability in reading and writing. The content will focus on writing (spelling, handwriting, and punctuation) and reading (comprehension, sequence). Basic development of parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation and proofreading will be practiced in workbook pages. Students will produce written text using well-structured sentences, correct spelling, punctuation and grammar and also interpret text based on in-class readings and group exercises. They will practice writing composition and literature composition. They will also do weekly workbook exercises to instill basic concepts and group activities to encourage creativity and confidence. English Reading and Writing(Grade 7-9) 英语阅读和写作(7-9年级)	The purpose is to develop reading and writing skills in preparation for SAT. Students will refine areas in English and Reading with supplementary reading and practice areas of the SAT practice exam. Students will also conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather and evaluate data from a variety of sources to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and their audience. All exercises will be in accordance with SAT standards and preparation. AP English AP英文	This course is a prep class for the AP Language course and exam. The purpose of the exam is to prepare students for the class. The class is not a comprehensive coverage of the AP Language content but rather seeks to put students into a competitive position when they begin the class. Typically, AP Language is taken junior year in high school. Some students will take it sophomore year. The class is also appropriate for students who will be taking AP Language this year. Enrollment is intended for freshman and sophomores. Open to all high school students though. Speech and Debate	The speech and debate course is divided by semester. Fall is speech. Spring is debate. Skills honed in the fall semester will be applied in the more difficult debate semester in spring. Speech will cover a wide range of topics and methods with a focus on a wide range of skills. Debate will follow a high school debate style primarily.
